Historic England is the lead body for heritage in England.
Historic England
- Advises government on which parts of our heritage are nationally important so they may be protected by designation and promote the importance of heritage in making places distinctive and valued
- Advises local authorities on managing changes to the most important parts of our heritage
- Encourages investment in heritage at risk
- Shares knowledge, skills and expertise by offering training and guidance, giving practical conservation advice and access to our resources
Historic England (HE) maintains the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) which provides details of those buildings, sites parks and gardens which are designated (legally protected). In addition HE, maintains the National Record for the Historic Environment (NRHE). This includes non-designated assets as well as the national record of Maritime . Pastscape is the public website for the NRHE.
